Torquay Australia Offers Some of the Best Beaches on the Great Ocean Road

Torquay is located in Victoria Australia. This town is called the gateway to the Great Ocean road one of the main tourist draws of Australia. This area did not become populated by Europeans until the mid 1800s when picnickers would come to spend the day and enjoy the local surroundings. Eventually many settlers moved to the area and named it after the seaside town Torquay found in England.

One of the main draws is the beach and the town has experienced some recent development around the beach area. In particular this is a spot for surfers. Two of the most famous being Bells beach and Juan Juc. Bells beach is famous as a surf beach and was used in the movie Point Break. This beach also holds the Rip Curl Pro Surf festival, one of the most well known surfing competitions found in the world. It is held annually around Easter.

The main areas for ocean views is to the south of town. Interestingly enough this are itself is called Ocean Views. It was originally grazing land for cattle but today is a residential area. The other main areas of town include Illawong estate, Wombah Park, Church estate and Zeally Bay.

This area also offers some of the best coastal walks around and this is the best way to view the natural coastal features. There is a surf coast walk that stretches for 35 km. Enjoy the gorgeous ocean views, dense forests, native birds, high cliffs and more. You will see many rare and even endangered animals that call this part of Australia home. It is not necessary to do the entire walk as it is divided into shorter sections. Some of the best sections of the walk include the areas around Point Addis and Bells beach.

Two other walks include the Jarosite track which passes by a jarosite mine and is about 5km. The Koori walk will provide you with plenty of information about the traditional uses of plants for medicine in the area. A spur off the Surf coast walk is ironbark track. This will take you to a lookout point for Point Addis and fords through the dense forest.

A great place to experience the limestone reefs around the coast of Victoria is the Point Danger marine sanctuary. Snorkeling around the break is a great way to experience the ocean life as over 96% of all creatures have not been disturbed. There are also many walks along the point.

Torquay is also along one of the great touring routes in Australia as is along the drive from Melbourne to Adelaide. This road passes along the Otways rainforest, Surf Coast, Twelve apostles, Coonawarra wine region, Bells Beach and Mount Gambier's Blue Lakes. If you are looking for some adventure then stop by the Southern Exposure company as they provide equipment for kayaking, surfing and mountain biking all throughout the area.

For a truly not to be forgotten experience take a flight on the Tiger Moth world adventure flights. This is an authentic vintage open cockpit plane. You can do extreme acrobatics when on this fantastic flight and experience the gorgeous views of the great ocean road all from the aircraft.
