There are many reasons why Bangkok is one of the world's favourite holiday destinations. If you take cheap flights to Thailand's capital you will be rewarded with exotic cuisine, history and culture to enjoy during your break.
And a trip to Bangkok's famous floating markets will enable you to experience all of those things at once. The colourful markets offer a very different shopping experience to anything you are likely to find in Europe and their noise and aromas will ensure they are one of the most memorable day trips you make while in Thailand.
Bangkok was once home to an intricate network of canals - or khlongs as they are known locally - that led to the city being dubbed the Venice of the East. As the city was modernised the canals largely disappeared, as they were filled in and then transformed into more conventional streets.
A few canals remain, particularly in outlying areas of the capital, and that is where you will find the floating markets, complete with their explosion of colour and noise. If you have booked Bangkok flights for your holiday, you can expect to see traders selling fruit, vegetables, flowers and traditional local goods from their boats. The markets are also a great place to try some fabulous local dishes for a low price, as some of the traders are effectively floating takeaways.
The biggest of the floating markets is Damnoen Saduak, which attracts thousands of tourists, along with locals shopping for food, every day. The large number of traders here gives the site a chaotic feel, as they attempt to manoeuvre their boats to the best positions close to the side of the canal and shout to the shoppers to grab their attention.
As well as food, Damnoen Saduak is a great place to buy souvenirs, as many of the traders cater for the tourist market and offer the kind of trinkets you would only find in Thailand. But don't be taken in by the simple way the traders work, as they are all skilled negotiators - as you will find out if you try to haggle for your purchase.
Located close to Damnoen Saduak is the smaller floating market at Tha Kha, which has a much more authentic feel than its tourist-centric neighbour and is set on a beautiful stretch of water lined with sugar palms. But it is only held a handful of times each month, with the dates dictated by the lunar calendar.
Both of those markets are a reasonable distance outside the centre of Bangkok and you will need to take a boat trip or bus ride to reach them, but there are two markets - Bang Khu Wiang and Taling Chan - that are located closer to the city.
These smaller events are both very traditional and while they may not be quite as vibrant as Damnoen Saduak, they are a better representation of the real Thailand. As you haggle for your souvenirs or select a tasty treat, you are likely to see monks in rowing boats visiting the traders and collecting money for the poor.
There is far more to interest tourists in Thailand's capital than just its floating markets and if you are booking Bangkok cheap flights for your next holiday, you can expect to find a city that is the perfect fusion of historic and modern.
It is packed with royal and religious landmarks of the sort you will see in few other places. The Grand Palace is a must-visit attraction during any break in Bangkok, as the lavishly decorated royal home and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in its grounds are both spectacular sights.
The beautiful Wat Traimit, the home of the world's largest gold seated Buddha, and Wat Arun temple are also well worth visiting. And if you want a little genuine Thai culture, why not try a meditation lesson at Wat Mahathat, the headquarters of one of the country's largest monastic orders.
Bangkok is home to more modern attractions, such as high-quality international restaurants, shopping malls, theatres and nightlife. Along with those facilities and the availability of cheap flights from the UK, you will find a wide range of affordable accommodation, helping to make the city one of the most visitor-friendly in the world.
