The Malacanang of the North, or the "Malacanang ti Amianan" with the locals, is one of the 29 rest houses the former strongman, Ferdinand Marcos, built during his 20-year term. Actually, it the former First Lady Imelda Marcos who spearheaded the project. It was her gift to her husband who was turning 60 years old. The construction began in 1975 and then finally, the structure was completed in 1977. It was opened with a great fanfare, and was designed to accommodate and entertain the people from the upper class of the society.
