Hanoi: Evoking Memories From My Childhood

Hanoi is situated on the bank of The Red River and is almost 1100 miles north of the Vietnam capital Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon. 2010 marked the 1000th anniversary of the official establishment of the city, but people have lived here in one form or another for 5000 years. Highlights of Hanoi

Traffic is one of the first things that will capture your attention; you'll be inundated by mopeds, one of the most common forms of transport. A personal challenge is to find the moped carrying the most passengers and take a photograph for evidence. It's very common to see three, four or even five people on a moped. They are used as a form of transportation not only for people, but also to carry goods such as food, hay bales and even live stock. As you pass the endless rice paddy fields and the extremely skinny yet very tall buildings you will eventually make your way to Hanoi's Old Quarter. Hanoi really is Vietnam at its best; where everything is happening all at once, it's truly electric. The narrow alleys are filled with mopeds, whether parked or being driven, vendors galore, cafes, restaurants and hotels.
